Macduff Aquarium – Scotland’s Best Visitor Experience

Situated on Aberdeenshire’s scenic coast in the traditional fishing town of Macduff, Macduff Marine Aquarium features marine life from the Moray Firth, Scotland’s largest bay, in a variety of exciting and innovative exhibits.
So much so, that it has been awarded an award as Scotland’s Best Visitor Experience. Attractions were judged on the experience they delivered to the visitor and they way in which they monitored and improved this experience.
The aquarium’s deep central exhibit, which displays a living kelp reef, is the only one of its kind in Britain. It is open to the sky and natural daylight allows seaweeds to grow and create a realistic home for over one hundred fish and countless invertebrates. The tank is 5m deep, 10m in diameter and holds 400,000 litres of seawater.
It opened a new jellyfish display earlier this year and leads the way in exhibiting Scottish deep-water invertebrates that are not shown in any other aquarium in Britain.
The aquarium operates an education programme and is a big hit with schools as well as the general public, attracting around 50,000 visitors per year.
