Black Phantom Tetra
A full bodied tetra with a black diamond patch with a silver outline on the sides of its body, the Black Phantom Tetra is almost transulent when seen against the light. The male can take on a darker color when ready to breed or when defending it’s territory in the aquarium against other black phantom tetras.
The male’s fins are black, as is the female’s dorsal fin; the female’s pelvic, anal, and adipose fins are reddish in color. The black phantom tetra reaches a maximum overall length of approximately 4.5 cm (1.75 in).
While it is not particularly colorful, it makes up for this by its display behavior: the males are territorial and defend their space against their neighbors by presenting themselves in profile with the dorsal and anal fins fully extended, and the dark color intensified, making the edging of the body patch stand out prominently. They prefer staying in schools of 4 to 6, but don’t be surprised if they indulge in mock fights – it’s nothing serious, so lie back and enjoy it.
The Phantoms prefer a well-planted tank (particularly with floating plants), subdued lighting and a dark substrate. Water parameters are not critical and may be soft to hard, and acidic to slightly alkaline.
All flake and freeze-dried foods are acceptable for the Black Phantom Tetra, but regular offerings of live brine shrimp should be included in its diet.
