Setting Up Home

And so, we finally bought ourselves our first aquarium. This is 2 feet in width, 1 foot in height and 1 foot in width, and we hope will house a number of happy fish.
We initially bought a sandy substrate (coarse sand with a mix of crushed shells), but soon discovered that it was a really bad idea - it is extremely difficult to keep clean, and because of the small particles, is difficult to wash out while cleaning the aquarium.
Eventually, we dumped it for larger gravel, which keeps the water clearer, and also brings out the fishes themselves. For anyone setting up an aquarium for the first time, I can safely recommend getting a substrate which is made of larger sized gravel.
Some plants, a piece of coral, an oxygen pump, a filter, and we were ready. But more on that later.
